The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published a significant protocol for assessing hazards posed by plasticiser substances used in food contact materials (FCMs). This milestone in EFSA’s preparatory work will re-evaluate health risks from various plasticisers in FCMs, such as phthalates and their alternatives. Developed with public consultation, the protocol transparently outlines the methodology for data retrieval, selection, and evidence integration in hazard assessments. These assessments will form the foundation of EFSA’s risk evaluations, considering updated exposure estimates including dietary and overall exposure from FCMs.
Innovamol’s contribution to this initiative related the collection of relevant data. We conducted an extensive literature review, adhering to the LitSearch approach, to support EFSA’s mission. Our team meticulously sifted through 21,453 papers, eventually narrowing down to 383 pertinent documents spanning eight critical areas. From plasticisers in food to their migration and non-food uses, our comprehensive summarizing table is a testament to our dedication to organizing scientific data efficiently. This endeavour is crucial for EFSA to access the most relevant information swiftly and accurately in the realm of plasticisers and FCMs. Our work exemplifies the importance of integrating scientific data effectively – it’s not just about gathering information but making it accessible and comprehensible for meaningful analysis and decision-making.”
